CSS3 Awesomeness

with Meagan Fisher

So, you’ve heard CSS3 is awesome, but just how awesome? You have no idea. You think you do, but you don’t. You know who does? Meagan Fisher. By Jove, I think we’ve happened upon a coincidence! The very same Meagan Fisher is teaching this workshop. Why don’t you sign up and learn how to cascade the crap out of some stylesheets? We should warn you, though; workshop attendees will be endowed with the ability to create web styles that make users weep.

Let Meagan enchant you as she teaches you to make designs that feel like part of the natural world. Using the organic curves of border-radius, the subtle lighting effects of box-shadow, and the gentle glow of text-shadow, your web sites will feel more lifelike than ever. Hungry for more? CSS3 animations and transitions add a new dimension of character to the experience of using a site, and multiple background images allow for rich textures. Get ready to make your designs jump off the screen, unless you think you can’t handle it.

Mobile Apps with Web Standards

with David Kaneda

OMG, iPhones are the coolest! I have this idea for an app that creates a directory of everyone tweeting about bunny rabbits on my street. There are 12! Now, if only I knew Objective-C and Xcode. And Interface Builder. And all those APIs. And iPhone approvals! Please make it stop! All I know is HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Not sure those do me any good. What’s that you say, David? I can build mobile apps using that stuff? And my apps will work on Android as well as iPhones and iPads? I declare shenanigans!

Withhold thine shenanigans, gentle reader, and give yourself over to enlightenment as David walks you through building an actual app in just 3 hours using Sencha Touch, a framework for building rich web apps. When you leave this workshop, you will no longer be daunted by mobile devices. They will be daunted by you. Am I interested in learning Sencha? You betcha!

with Patrick Lauke

Alright, so you keep hearing all the cool kids talking about HTML5. You know it’s almost certainly better than HTML4 and a hell of a lot better than HTML3. But what does it all mean? At the end of the day, what does anything mean?

Well, I’ll tell you. HTML5 means web sites that shatter the imagination into a million little pieces that each become their own universe with a billion galaxies. Imagine the power!

Spend 3 hours with Patrick Lauke, web evangelist in Opera’s Developer Relations team and master of standards, and he’ll endow you with this superpower. Think native audio and video, canvas, and powerful new APIs like the Geolocation API. This workshop will kickstart your HTML5 knowledge and show you how you can start to use HTML5’s new features and functionalities today! But remember, with great power comes great responsibility.

Analytical Design

with Simon Collison

You don’t need this workshop. You’ve got design all figured out. It’s about gut feelings, empathy, and pretty colors. No need to read any further, right? Wrong. Design is also a science, and there is no one more capable of teaching you all about design’s serious side than Simon Collison, a.k.a. Colly.

It will be an afternoon bursting with ideas and methods. This workshop is essential for those with analytical minds (looking at you, developers) who want to improve and better understand design processes. Colly will explain the science behind the decisions we make and the meanings they convey.

But, if Colly’s photo is any indication, he doesn’t think you have the moxie to give yourself over to design’s analytical side. Since we’re talking about design, the most powerful force in the world, which could blow your head clean off, you’ve got to ask yourself one question, “Do I feel lucky?” Well, do ya, punk?
